The Sinai Surgeon

Dr. R. Mervyn Letts, M.D., FRCSC, is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who in 1966-67 was a Medical Officer in the RCAF posted to the United Nations Emergency Force in the Sinai from a surgical residency at the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa in the run-up year to the Six Day War.
As well as caring for Canadian troops, the author made many trips into the desert to care for Bedouin tribesmen and their families. Subsequently the author subspecialized in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and was appointed Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba and subsequently at the University of Ottawa. He also served as Head of Surgery at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital and Head of Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa. In 2003 Dr. Letts stepped down as Head of Paediatric Surgery at CHEO and was asked to set up a Paediatric Orthopaedic program by the government of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi.
The author has published two medical textbooks; The Principles of Seating the Disabled (375 pages) pub CRC Press, Boca Raton 1991 ISBN 0-8493-6021-8 and Management of Paediatric Fractures (1243 pages) pub Churchill Livingstone, New York 1994 ISBN 0-443-08860-8
