The writing of a book is a major commitment that requires the dedication and perseverance of the author who also requires the understanding, support and advice of friends and family. Fortunately I have had that from my wife Marilyn, who also played a major role in the genesis of the Sinai Surgeon experiences, having worked for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency as well as having lived just across the Mediterranean Sea in Beirut, Lebanon during the years 1966-67, just prior to the abrupt expulsion of the Canadians from the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) and the impending Six Day War. As with most events of major historical significance, the passage of time often changes the interpretation of events from those held at the time of the historical happening. In that regard the provision of access to original military and political documents during the tenure of UNEF and in the subsequent years through the facilities of the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa and the Canadian Military Archives was essential and greatly appreciated. The incredible retention and provision to me of many of my letters written to my wife Marilyn, other family members and friends were a great assistance in keeping events and dates accurate. To my friend and colleague Mike Belcher, who was the last Canadian airman to leave Camp Marina in the Sinai, my sincere thanks for providing administrative information concerning 115 Air Transport Unit in particular the Daily Routine Orders as well as the fascinating tales of the last moments of our Sinai base. I am indebted to Mr. Andrew Halmay of Toronto for permission to republish the lyrics to his song Baksheesh which is published in his autobiography entitled “On and On and On.... by Andy Halmay.
